The Backstory

Speed at the Top of the Order

01

A Cuban-born speedster

Came from Cuba to become the Oakland Athletics' shortstop and igniting leadoff hitter.

02

Part of a rare three-peat

Started at shortstop for A's teams that won three consecutive World Series titles from 1972 through 1974, a run matched by no team other than the Yankees.

03

More than just speed

Led the American League in stolen bases six times and made six All-Star teams, but also delivered in the clutch — his two-run homer against the Mets in the 1973 World Series sparked the A's winning rally in the deciding Game 7.

Deeper Cuts on Bert Campaneris

01

In a September 1965 promotional stunt engineered by owner Charlie Finley, he played all nine positions in a single game, even pitching ambidextrously, until a shoulder injury cut the experiment short.

02

During the 1972 ALCS he was ejected, fined, and suspended for throwing his bat at a pitcher who had hit him — though he was still allowed to play in that year's World Series.

03

Over 19 major-league seasons he collected 2,249 hits and 649 stolen bases, and he still holds Athletics franchise records for games played, hits, and at-bats.

04

He won the Babe Ruth Award for his 1973 postseason performance and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

05

Signed out of Cuba just before the revolution made such moves nearly impossible, he later coached in Japan and helped the Seibu Lions win back-to-back Japan Series titles in 1987 and 1988.
