Our Story
The Hall Without a Hall
“The Hall Without a Hall.”
The Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1979 by Lou Spadia, the former president of the San Francisco 49ers, together with San Francisco Chamber of Commerce president Bill Dauer.
Spadia deliberately refused to build a physical museum. A building and the staff to run it, he argued, would drain money away from the two things that actually mattered: honoring the athletes and funding youth sports. He called it the Hall Without a Hall.
The first Enshrinement Banquet followed in 1980, honoring Joe DiMaggio, Willie Mays, Hank Luisetti, Ernie Nevers and Bill Russell. It raised enough to send $5,000 grants to Police Activities Leagues in Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose — the start of a giving streak that has never stopped.
